Professional Experience

Founding member of GVA Gómez-Villares & Atencia.

He has been working as a lawyer since 1980. He has been a member of the Málaga, Granada and Córdoba Bar Associations. He has founded the following law firms: Atencia Abogados, S.C., Gómez-Villares y Atencia Abogados and Consultores Tributarios, S.L.P.

He is specialized in Company, Commercial and Banking Law as well as in Civil and Land Law. He has been a legal adviser and secretary of the management council in several companies and entities.

In March of 2007, he joined the banking sector taking the First Vice president role of the Unicaja Management Council, and, in its Executive Commission, he was also the Executive Vice president of the Unicaja Banking Corporation. He later moved on to be the Executive President of the same corporation and Executive Vice president of the Unicaja Group Business Corporation.

From December 2011 to April 2018, he was the Executive Vice president of Unicaja Banco and, from 2012 to December 2019, he was the President of the European Bank of Finance (Unicaja).

From May 2018 to November 2019, he was the General Director of Unicaja Banco and a member of its Management Committee.

From 2007 to 2014, he was also counsellor for several banking and insurance societies, such as Unicorp Patrimonio Sociedad de Valores, Compañía Andaluza de Rentas e Inversiones, CASER and Unicorp Vida.

He also advised property development companies like Espacio Medina, Inmobiliaria Acinipo, and Muelle Uno.

From 2011 to July 2019, he was Vice president of the famous Deoleo company —former Sos Cuétara— Management Council.

From 2014 to 2016, he was a trustee for Fundación Bancaria Unicaja.

In the public sector, he was a Málaga deputy in the Parliament of Andalucía (III, IV and V terms), Senator in Andalucía (V term), and Málaga National Deputy (VI, VII terms).

In the Parliament of Andalucía, among other roles, he was the Grupo Popular Andaluz Spokesman (1993-1999) and President of the Commerce and Tourism Committee.

In the Senate, he was the Grupo Popular Deputy Spokesman, member of the Constitutional and Justice Committee and Special Internet Commission, as well as a speaker in the Civil Procedure Law and Data Protection Regulation.

In the Congress of Deputies, among other responsibilities and participation in several regulations, he was the Grupo Popular Deputy Spokesman (2005-2007), GPP Spokesman in the Defence Commission (2000-2004), and the Investigation Commission for the 11-M (2004). Moreover, he was the President of the Spanish Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of OTAN (2002-2004).

Politicly, he was the President of the PP group in Málaga, Vice president of PP in Andalucía, and National Secretary of Communication in the same group.
